Title: Board-certified Geropsychologist & Professor Emerita, Dept. of Psychiatry & Behavioral SciencesAffilitation: Stanford University School of Medicine
Brief Bio:
For 40+ years I've worked in the field of geropsychology - as researcher, clinician, and educator. During my career I've focused on two primary areas: first, adapting and evaluating cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to make it more effective with older adults experiencing depressive disorders, and second, developing and evaluating a variety of psychoeducational programs (rooted in CBT) to reduce distress and improve qualify of life in family caregivers of persons living with dementia. I've worked with a wide range of caregiver populations - both in the US and in other countries - and enjoy an international reputation for this work. Recently published books include two updated (therapist and client) treatment manuals for later life depression (with Dr. Ann Steffen and colleagues) and a "primer" on how to assess and treat psychological distress in family caregivers (with Dr. Sara Qualls and colleagues). Currently I consult on projects that explore the use of technology to improve caregivers' well-being and work with a multidisciplinary team to adapt successful caregiver interventions to caregivers from diverse backgrounds. I plan to continue this work as long as my health permits!
