Melanie M. Wilcox, Ph.D., ABPP, President of Division 17, is an Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University at Albany as well as a licensed and board-certified counseling psychologist. She has over 40 publications predominantly in culturally and structurally responsive mental health, is a former Chair of the APA Board of Educational Affairs (2020), and also works part-time in private practice.

Jordan Wright, Ph.D., ABAP, ABPP, President of Division 12, is a Clinical Associate Professor of Clinical/Counseling Psychology at New York University. He has authored numerous books and peer-reviewed articles on issues of equity, justice, and culture in psychological practice. The founding director of the Center for Counseling and Community Wellbeing at NYU and also a former Chair of the APA Board of Educational Affairs (2021), Dr. Wright is also an active practitioner.

Antoinette Miranda, Ph.D., President of Division 16, is Professor of School Psychology at The Ohio State University. Formerly a school psychologist in New York City Public Schools, Dr. Miranda’s research focuses on developing effective interventions for school-aged children, especially those most vulnerable. She was instrumental in transforming the OSU School Psychology program to have an urban and social justice focus. Dr. Miranda was elected to and served for eight years on the Ohio State Board of Education.

Alex L. Pieterse, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology at Boston College as well as the Director of the Boston College Institute for the Study of Race and Culture. The incoming editor of The Counseling Psychologist and a highly accomplished scholar, Dr. Pieterse’s research focuses on racism, racial trauma, and psychotherapist training. He published the book Measuring the Effects of Racism with Dr. Robert Carter in 2020.

Celeste Malone, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of School Psychology at Howard University as well as a recent past-president of the National Association of School Psychologists. A former member of the APA Board of Educational Affairs, Dr. Malone’s research predominantly focuses on how to effectively work with minoritized students in K-12 education. She is also an independent EDI consultant.

Jude Bergkamp, Psy.D., is a Professor and Chair of the Clinical Psychology doctoral program at Antioch University Seattle as well as clinical faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington. Dr. Bergkamp is also President of the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology and served on the APA Board of Educational Affairs/Board of Professional Affairs doctoral competencies task force, which sought to re-envision doctoral psychology competencies through an EDI framework. Active in private practice as well, Dr. Bergkamp’s scholarship focuses on the decolonization of psychology and the role of privilege and oppression in psychotherapy.

 

Overview:         

This is the first in a CODAPAR grant-funded webinar series hosted jointly by APA Divisions 17 (Counseling Psychology), 12 (Clinical Psychology), and 16 (School Psychology) on Advancing a Critical Health Service Psychology. In this first webinar we will set the stage for the series by first hearing from the three Division Presidents: Dr. Melanie Wilcox (Division 17), Dr. A. Jordan Wright (Division 12), and Dr. Antoinette Miranda (Division 16). Then, Drs. Alex Pieterse, Jude Bergkamp, and Celeste Malone will further present on the need to shift toward an antiracist, critical Health Service Psychology and its importance for counseling, clinical, and school psychology, respectively.
