Presenter: Joseph McCowan, Psy.D

Dr. Joseph McCowan is a licensed clinical psychologist based in Los Angeles with extensive experience in psychedelic-assisted therapy, clinical research, and education. He served as a Co-Therapist and Supervisor in the MAPS-sponsored Phase 3 clinical trials of MDMA-Assisted Therapy for PTSD and contributed to the MAPS Therapy Training and Education program as a Lead Educator and Consultant. As a member of the MAPS Diversity Working Group, Dr. McCowan advanced initiatives to increase inclusion and representation in clinical studies.

He is currently a therapist in Compass Pathways’ Phase 3 trials of Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy for Treatment-Resistant Depression and serves as a Lead Trainer with Fluence, where he educates mental health professionals in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy. Previously, Dr. McCowan provided Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy and psychedelic integration services at the California Center for Psychedelic Therapy.

Dr. McCowan holds a doctorate in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He serves on the Board of Directors for Chacruna and Lykos Therapeutics and is deeply committed to increasing access to psychedelic therapies for historically underserved communities.

 

 Overview:         

This webinar provides a foundational introduction to psychedelics and Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy (PAT), offering participants a comprehensive and critical overview of the field. The presentation explores the diverse range of psychedelic compounds and traces their use across time and cultures, emphasizing indigenous traditions and ceremonial practices. It examines the emergence of psychedelic science in the West, highlighting pivotal moments in 20th-century research as well as recent developments in clinical studies.

The course will also explore the historical and ongoing marginalization of communities within psychedelic research, with particular attention to cultural appropriation and ethical concerns. The presentation aims to offer a nuanced understanding of the promise and complexity of psychedelic-assisted care while honoring its cross-cultural roots and advocating for equity and inclusion in the field’s future.
